Veracruz is a prime location to  Bird watch, and if you love raptors, this is the place to be, from August to October is the raptor season, you will be able to see droves of Swainson’s Hawks, Mississippi Kites,  Laughing Falcon, Collared Forest-Falcon, Zone-tailed Hawk, Common Black-Hawk, Peregrine and Aplomado Falcons,Turkey Vultures, and year round you have many different bird species:

Aztec Thrush, Ocellated Thrasher, Blue Mockingbird, Altamira Yellowthroat, Hooded Yellowthroat, Strickland’s Woodpecker, White-striped Woodcreeper, Bearded Wood-Partridge
Long-tailed Wood-Partridge, Red-crowned Parrot, Tawny-collared Nightjar, Long-tailed Sabrewing
Mexican Sheartail, Bumblebee Hummingbird,Slaty Vireo, Dwarf Jay, Gray-barred Wren, Sumichrast’s Wren, Nava’s Wren, Russet Nightingale, Rufous-capped Brush-Finch, Collared Towhee, Bridled Sparrow, Striped Sparrow, Red Warbler, Crimson-collared Grosbeak, Black-backed Oriole, and theTuxtla Quail-Dove, which you will only be able to observe here, due to the fact that it is indigenous to the area.

Day 0 Arrival in Mexico and flight to Veracruz.

Day 1 Cardel

Cardel will be our base of operations, Cardel is right in the middle of Birding Contry, we can find more than 700 species of birds, 28 of endemic to Mexico, home to 30 raptor secies, we have extensive Raptor fly overs in Cardel, it is also the main migratory route for American White Pelicans and Wood Storks, so our first day will be spent in and arround the town of Cardel.

Day 2 La Mancha Biological Station.

just 15 miles  from Cardel,La Mancha is  a field station operated by the  Mexican Institute of Ecology this is a prime site to observe amid its forests and lagoon Red-billed Pigeon, White-bellied Emerald, Rose-throated Becard, Masked Tityra, Montezuma Oropendola, Melodius Blackbird, and Blue-gray Tanager, Laughing Falcon, Collared Forest-Falcon, Zone-tailed Hawk, Common Black-Hawk, Peregrine and Aplomado Falcons, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Boat-billed and other herons, Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, White Ibis, and Aztec Parakeet, and docens of more species

Day 3 Xalapa

Xalapa is the Capital of the State of Veracruz, also a cultural center here we will be able to see the  Blue Mockingbird, White-naped Brush-Finch, Azure-crowned Hummingbird, Blue-crowned Motmot, Rusty Sparrow, Cordilleran Flycatcher, Mountain Trogon, Hooded Grosbeak, Slate-throated Redstart, Gray Silky-Flycatcher, White-eared and Bumblebee Hummingbirds, Collared Towhee, Rufous-capped Brush-Finch, Russet Nightingale-Thrush, Hepatic Tanager, Black-headed Siskin, Tufted Flycatcher, Green Jay, Band-backed Wren, Squirrel Cuckoo, and Scrub Euphonia. And watch for migrants from eastern and western North America.

Day 4 Catemaco Lake

​

 Lake Catemaco, was formed within the calderas of several extinct volcanoes. along the lake’s edges we will find c tropical species: Red-lored Parrot, Spot-breasted Wren, Blue-crowned Motmot, and White-breasted Wood-Wren, as well as Stripe-throated  and Long-billed  Hermits different tipes of hummingbirds, Ruddy Crake, Keel-billed Toucan, Collared Aracari, Violaceous Trogon, Bright-rumped Attila, Collared Aracari and woodcreepers, as well as black and white Owls, Bat Falcon, Greay headed Kite, White Hawk, among many other species.

Day 5 La Antigua

This  is the oldest Spanish settlement in America, in this coastal area we will observe Mexican Sheartail and Bumblebee Hummingbird, Black-headed Trogon, Cavinet’s Emerald, Buff-bellied Hummingbird, Common Pauraque, Common Tody-Flycatcher, Plain-breasted Ground-Dove, Pinnated Bittern, Northern Jacana, Bare-throated Tiger-Heron, Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture, Double striped thicked knee, one of onle three species in the northern Hemesphere, Belted Kingfisher, Ringed Kingfisher, Amazon Kingfisher, Green Kingfisher, among other species.
